Another Great Meeting

One of the benefits of being part of the Red River Valley Woodcarvers is our monthly meetings. We have plenty of time to visit and share our finished carvings and our works in progress. There is always plenty of laughter and coffee and treats. Thank you to Barry for the treats and to Joe Robideau for leading the meeting.

A few snapshots from the meeting

Not sure what these 2 were up to, but at least they behaved for the picture.

Dick Skauge with 2 of his Santa ornaments. He added them to the ornament box (they are looking a little lonely, so please carve some ornaments to add to the collection. We will be deciding where to donate the ornaments next year.

Alan Pearson had 2 projects, a caragana wood comfort bird, and a bowl he rosemaled. The rosemaling is delicately done in back allowing the beauty of the wood to show.

Joe Robideau brought his bust from Marty’s class and his wood burned mill picture from a class with Brenda Lodemeyer. He’s got.a big smile, because he just won the caragana branch Alan donated as our door prize.

Joe Simons has a joint project with Alan Pearson. Joel made the snowflake on a scrollsaw, and Alan contributed the chip carving.

Bill Carlson brought an amazing owl and panda bear.

Duane Bischoff brought in a couple of works in progress. Watch out for the wolf, it looks like he might bite.

Ruth made the Bob Ross Christmas tree ornaments from Woodcarving Illustrated.

Bob Lawrence brought in a self portrait study he did a few years ago and the fun whimsy houses he has been teaching. He refused to smile, maybe to look more like the portrait?

Patty Molm brought in her Santa carved in Maynard’s Santa class and painted in Rhonda’s painting class

Painting Your Wood Carving

November 4 – Painting Your Woodcarvings with Rhonda Smith

This class is for beginners who want to learn how to finish a woodcarving project with paint.  Those with more experience and would like to see how Rhonda approaches painting are also welcome.  We will go over the process step by step, which will include some short dry times…there is nothing quite as fascinating as watching paint dry!

We will learn: How to begin, thinning paint, blending techniques, antiquing and how to seal your project when dry.

Please bring a carving to paint: Santas, caricature carvings, and anything similar to that.  If you are questioning if it is “okay” to bring something, feel free to message and ask rhonda.smith00@yahoo.com

Rhonda will be providing art supplies, but if you have certain paints/colors and brushes that you already have for a specific project and just haven’t gotten to it, bring them along.  She’ll help you with it.

If you use Rhonda’s materials, there will be an additional $5 supply fee.

Class will run from 9am to 4:30pm and is limited to 12 students.  The fee is $30.00 per student payable to the Red River Valley Woodcarvers. The class materials can be purchased from the instructor.

Lunch will not be provided but there are many venues available in the area.

Please complete a registration form at “In The Chips” with a $15.00 deposit to reserve your place in class.  There is a minimum of 6 preregistered students required or the class will be canceled and deposits refunded.

41st Annual R.R.V. Int. Wood Arts Festival

Thank you everybody who attended the 41st Annual Red River Valley International Wood Arts Festival this year on April 8-10th at the Baymont Inn, Fargo. We had an amazing turnout, twice the number of people that attended the show last year!!!

The aisles were packed with wood art enthusiast and people that just came in to admire the beautiful works on display.

SHOW16-9

Artists from all over the Midwest and even Canada had tables exhibiting their best work.

SHOW16-1

The Wood Arts Festival is a grand show where you can come see everything from carvers, turners, burners, antler carvings and chip carvers!

SHOW16-2

If you turn pens, do inlay work or even some scroll saw pieces, you will find something to admire! Don Nettum is the skilled and patient soul behind these wonderful scrollsaw masterpieces. Wow!

SHOW16-4

If you are looking for some quality handmade utensils stop by and check out The Karving Koskelas! I think their whole family is involved in some kind of art in one form or another.

SHOW16-5

Towards the back of the room we keep some of the best woodturners around in Ryan Hoss and Paul Hedman. These guys create some far out stuff!

SHOW16-3

SHOW16-10

The Wood Arts Festival isn’t just about the artist. It’s also a great opportunity for the public to take classes and even attend some free demonstrations on almost all the disciplines of wood art!

SHOW16-6

The show also features a work in progress piece. This piece is a carousel horse and is a direct replica of a historic horse from the carousel at the Red River Zoo. Larry Longtine and Dick Skauge have been chipping away at the horse and when complete it will be donated to the Red River Z00!

SHOW16-7

This year the show brought in nationally recognized carver Chris Hammack to teach classes and display some of his amazing caricatures! Thank you Chris for the great class and inspiration you bring to the carving community!
